Rural Sky was born in 2016 with a clear purpose: to provide mental health care that genuinely meets the needs of people in the Goondiwindi region.

The practice was established in recognition that effective mental health support in rural communities requires more than service availability. It requires continuity, local knowledge, and an understanding of the practical, social and cultural realities of rural life.

Today, Rural Sky continues this purpose through the work of Katherine Johnstone, Accredited Mental Health Social Worker. Her practice draws on extensive experience across rural mental health, government and non-government settings, and is informed by evidence-based therapeutic approaches, comprehensive clinical assessment, and an informed understanding of the broader contexts that influence wellbeing in regional communities.

Rural Sky remains committed to the Goondiwindi community and surrounding district, providing consistent, high-quality mental health care that supports resilience, capacity and meaningful change over time.

Katherine Johnstone

Accredited Mental Health Social Worker

BSocSc, MSW, AMHSW, MAASW

Katherine is committed to providing high-quality, ethical mental health care and believes that people living in rural and regional communities should have access to professional support that is consistent, skilled, and responsive to their circumstances.

Since commencing work in the human services sector in 1999, Katherine has worked with individuals, couples, parents, and groups across a wide range of settings. Her work includes assisting people experiencing psychological distress, trauma, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, parenting challenges, life transitions, challenges associated with ADHD, autism, and other forms of neurodiversity, and the cumulative pressures associated with work, family, and community responsibilities. Katherine has experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, including those living with disability, people with diverse neurodevelopmental profiles, and people from a broad range of cultural backgrounds.

Katherine’s therapeutic approach is relational and integrative. Her work focuses on helping individuals and couples recognise patterns that influence emotional responses and behaviour, strengthen regulation and connection, and develop practical ways forward that can be sustained over time.

Her clinical practice draws on evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Theraplay-informed therapy, the Circle of Security framework, and the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy. This work is underpinned by comprehensive clinical assessment and a clear focus on safety, accountability, and meaningful therapeutic change.
